High School Diploma Programs

Monday, October 11th, 2010

If you are preparing yourself for college entry or would like to acquire a rewarding career, then the first step would be to look for good high school diploma programs. Once you have achieved the ever-important high school education, you can enroll in college degree programs with confidence.

As an alternate way to prepare for college entry, there are many programs designed for adult learners who need to complete their secondary education and get a high school diploma.

Primarily, secondary education for adults may be found at vocational schools, adult-education learning centers, and technical schools. It is even possible to get a high school diploma online. Students can earn diplomas via credit classes, which will prepare them for entry into trade school programs or other college courses.

Most high school diploma programs will require an assessment test to determine student skills in areas such as math, reading and writing. Common curriculums will include English, Arts, Mathematics, US History, American Government, State History, Social Studies, Science, Health and Physical Education, and additional electives.

In addition to standard classes, more comprehensive programs may offer vocational/college preparation and credit classes that allow the student to accumulate credits that may be transferred to a college degree program.

The difference between a high school diploma and a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) is that the GED is an exam consisting of five sets of tests in Interpretation of Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Writing Skills; whereas a high school diploma guarantees that specific coursework has been completed and required credits have been earned.

A secondary education opens doors to students who are actively seeking extended educational and occupational opportunities. Adult learning can be the first step to personal and professional success!

If you are researching secondary education for adults, you will find many good schools and colleges on our website. Submit a request for more information, and use it to help you choose one of the best high school diploma programs offered in your area.

Monday, December 21st, 2009

With the strong competitiveness of the current job market, possessing a high school diploma is becoming increasingly necessary in order to be hired for a good position. There are many who have, for various reasons, been unable to earn a high school diploma. Fortunately, it is never too late to earn a high school diploma. Those who haven’t had the opportunity to complete their high school educations have resources available to them. One such option is taking courses online. Online courses provide exceptionally convenient means to completing courses and ascertaining a high school diploma.

Many who have not graduated from high school take the G.E.D (General Educational Development) exam as an alternative to earning a high school diploma. G.E.D tests are used to verify whether G.E.D. test takers have the academic skills and knowledge expected of high school students in the United States and Canada. Though this is certainly a sound alternative to earning a high school diploma, possessing a high school diploma is held as a standard that passing the G.E.D exams does not substitute for completely. Many employers tend to prefer those with high school diplomas over those who have passed the G.E.D exams.

Home school completion programs offer comprehensive courses in which students earn credits as they complete courses. This can be done online from home so that students may work at a pace that works well with their schedule. These types of courses are generally designed to be completed in a reasonable length of time, and many students can complete them at a time span between three and twelve months.

Continental Academy provides its students with regional accreditation. Most high schools have regional accreditation but home study high school programs typically do not. By taking the affordable, highly convenient online courses provided by Continental Academy students earn a regionally accredited high school diploma that is recognized by government employers, career and community colleges and universities. Continental Academy also offers accelerated programs so that students may obtain their diplomas quickly.

Get a High School Diploma Online

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

So you want to earn a high school diploma online? Before you begin, you need to decide why it is you want to start down that path. Please do not do it because you think it will be easier. This is rarely true; often it is exactly the opposite. While in traditional high schools, there is someone who monitors your education. When you take your high school education online, there is much more independence. That is both good and less good.

There are two basic kinds of online high school diploma programs. There are commercial programs and there are public programs. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. It is best to explore both to determine which is the right choice for you

Commercial Programs

Commercial online high school programs include schools like Penn Foster High School, Kaplan College Preparatory High School, and National High School. These programs offer an online high school program for varying amounts of money. The advantages to these types of programs is that most of them are available to students regardless of age. So, whether you are fifteen or fifty, you have access to the majority of these programs.

These sorts of programs, however, are the ones where you need to be the most careful. It appears that there are just as many fake programs as legitimate ones. A commercial program should have regional or national accreditation. However, and importantly, just as there are fake schools, there is also fake accreditation. If the accreditor is not listed on the list of recognized accrediting associations from the U.S. Department of Education, it is probably not a good choice.

Public Programs

Public programs include such entities as charter schools, university-based high schools, and state departments of education-funded schools. Some of these high schools are actually free. There is somewhat less concern for the validity of these schools since most will either be regionally/nationally accredited or be approved by a state’s department of education. Colleges tend to find either acceptable.

Those free online high schools typically have specific age requirements that correlate to traditional public schools although, in some states, they are free up to the age of twenty-one. Check with the school to be sure. Readers will notice that school chains – like Insight Schools or Connections Academies – have begun to sprout throughout the United States. To my thinking, this can be good for quality control, but there are many find local programs as well (think: Greenways Academy or Laurel Springs School).

One thing you will notice is that these public programs tend to be newer. The commercial ones were out of the blocks much earlier. There are exceptions, of course, like the program at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, that has a long history.

Conclusion

Whichever direction you decide to go, make sure that you do your homework before you choose. This includes the issue of accreditation and even checking with your potential colleges to make sure of acceptability. That being said, properly accredited online high school programs have reached the point where acceptability is mostly a non- issue.
